Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I get an individual grant? If not, why not?

Q. Where can I find some personal financial support/assistance?
A. If you are eligible, Seafarer Support will direct you to the most appropriate charity for your needs. They can be contacted on freephone 0800 121 4765 (calls outside hours will be returned on the next working day) or via the interactive website;

A. Visit the Support for Seafarers page on this website and if you match all the criteria listed under Merchant Navy Fund Grants click here for full details and application forms.
Q. I'm a Merchant Navy seafarer from outside of the UK - where can I seek help from?
A. Contact International Seafarers Advice Network on freephone 00 800 7323 2737 or via their website;
Q. Why is this new fund needed now, when the numbers of UK Merchant Navy seafarers are reducing each year?
A. There are still a very large number of people with a MN background in need of support. The MN employed around 200,000 people at any one time until the 1970's and these are now in, or approaching retirement. Many of these had no pension provision and had little chance to accumulate savings. Equally there continue to be younger individuals and families who need support due to loss of a partner, serious illness, complex emotional problems, redundancy from the industry etc. Additionally, even with slowly reducing numbers, the needs of people are increasing as they see statutory (government and local government) support reduced.
Q. Will the MN Fund support causes that provide services to UK MN seafarers only, or will my donation go towards a charity like the Sailors' Children Society (which supports MN, RN and fishing)?
A. Any grants that go from this Fund to charities that support people from other sectors will be required to place the money in a restricted fund to be used exclusively for their MN beneficiaries.
Q. How will SfUK/MNWB assess the need specifically within the MN sector? How will this impact on SfUK's other grant-giving?
A. Seafarers UK have a long- established knowledge of those charities it supports. Among its trustees are representatives from the MN sector. It will also receive guidance from the MNWB, which is the umbrella for all MN charities in the UK.
Q. I would like to include the MN Fund in my Will. How do I go about doing this?
A. You should contact your solicitor or add a codicil to your will specifying what you would like to leave the MN Fund. Ideally you should include the charity's contact details, which will help the executors, and it would be awfully helpful if you told us as well.
